When you look back on your past, or your family’s past, the first things that come to mind probably aren’t carefully composed freeze frames where everyone has perfect hair and the light is designed just so. What you remember most, and most fondly, are probably the unplanned moments in between the “picture perfect” ones. Those are the memories that documentary photography aims to capture. When you and your family relax and stop being self conscious, your interactions become more authentic, your emotions more present. A documentary photographer, by using the techniques and guidelines of photojournalism, creates images of your family as they actually are. As John Lennon said, “Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans”.
